In statistics and research, a variable is any type of property or characteristic that you are attempting to quantify, manage, or regulate. In every study, a variable is analyzed.
This variable may be a person, place, thing, or idea. The value of a variable may vary among groups or over time.
If a person's eye color were the experiment's variable, it might range from brown to blue to green depending on the individual.

Researchers classify variables into a number of groups, the most popular of which are:

• Independent variables

• Dependent variables

• Quantitative variables

• Qualitative variables

• Intervening variables

• Moderating variables

• Extraneous variables

• Confounding variables

• Control variables

• Composite variables

In studies, researchers frequently attempt to determine whether and how an independent variable influences other variables. When analyzing relationships between study objects, researchers frequently attempt to determine what and how the dependent variable changes. Independent variables can have an impact on dependent variables, but dependent variables cannot have an impact on independent variables.
2. Quantitative vs. qualitative variables
Quantitative variables can be further classified into two types by researchers:
DISCRETE: Any numerical variable that can be counted, such as coins in your wallet or money in your savings account. Continuous: Numerical variables that cannot be counted indefinitely, such as time.
What Is the Difference Between Discrete and Continuous Variables? Qualitative, or categorical, variables can be further classified by researchers into three types:
BINARY VARIABLES are those that have only two options, such as male or female, red or blue. 
Variables that can be organized into more than two categories but do not have to be in any particular order.
Consider the following housing types: single-family home, condominium, and tiny home. 
ORDINAL VARIABLES are those that can be organized into more than two categories in a specific order.
Consider the level of satisfaction: Unsatisfied, neutral, satisfied.
